Dental Insurance

While most dental procedures might not be as costly as most medical procedures, many people still overlook the importance of having a good dental insurance plan.  Even standard dental procedures like check-ins and teeth cleanings can do some damage on your wallet.  If you need more complicated operations like root canals, veneers or dental implants, that will cost you even more without proper coverage.  It is also important to note that visits to the dentist may not be quite as expensive as doctor visits, but they usually need to happen on a more regular basis.  Therefore, you won’t be able to avoid dental expenses even if you are lucky.

What is the cheapest way to get dental insurance?

Now more than ever, there are several options for affordable dental insurance.  There are a number of people who are able to get dental insurance from their workplace.  Some employers are able to offer coverage at no cost to the employee.  However, the majority of U.S. citizens that receive coverage via work will have to pay a monthly cost off of their paycheck.  If you obtain dental insurance this way, it might be a good idea to check out monthly costs of other outside insurance plans to see which is higher.  Usually, dental insurance through your company is the cheapest, but that isn’t always true.  It depends on the employer.

If your employer doesn’t offer dental coverage, there are still other ways.  Dental insurance is not as expensive as medical coverage so most working people can afford it.  In this situation, you will be like a consumer who needs to research different plans in order to sniff out the best deal.  Some dental plans allow you to pay by the year while others require a monthly payment.  It really depends on what is right for you.

How do I know which dental plan is the best for me?

Got dental? Are you single?  Are you married or have children that need coverage?  You must answer these questions and then find the right plan that is suited for your situation.  It is also important to note that finding the least expensive dental plan is not always the best way to go.  Some plans might have low monthly fees, but offer poor coverage and vice versa.  Therefore, it could be smarter to pay more per month if that plan will actually cover the cost of your visits.  When choosing a dental plan, you need to do your research and see what is covered and what is not.  Find out how much of each type of dental procedure is covered and if it varies depending on specific circumstances.

You definitely want to make sure that you find out how each dental plan manages their co-payment system.    There are two major methods which dental insurance companies go about doing this.  Some will charge a certain percentage of each visit to the dentist while others will charge a flat co-payment for every visit.  Therefore, you should figure out what type of visits you will most likely be having and examine the costs to see which method will work best for your budget.

Also make sure what each dental insurance company will be willing to cover.  Different plans will have different percentages of coverage for different procedures.  Some plans offer fifty/fifty coverage which is basically 50% coverage on any dental procedure.  Other companies might opt not to provide coverage on specific procedures all together.   Again, you will need to research and compare to find out which plan will have the most effective coverage for your dental needs.

No matter who you are, it is always smart to purchase dental insurance because taking care of your teeth is essential and having proper coverage will save you big money down the line.  You just need to do the research, analyze your situation and find out how to get the best coverage for your buck.
