Missing Teeth & Dental Implants

Dental implants diagramThere are many drawbacks to having missing teeth. Of course, it makes you less attractive and may take away a lot of your self confidence. However, aside from the aesthetic problems, having missing teeth can cause several oral and non-oral health issues as well. If you have missing teeth you should strongly consider having dental implants.

Why should I replace missing teeth?

If you have missing teeth this makes it more difficult to eat many foods which can result in malnutrition. Not having certain teeth in place can cause other surrounding teeth to move around more which will make your bite uneven. When your teeth move around more they can become misaligned, which can result in a condition known as (TMD) temporomandibular joint dysfunction. The tissue in your mouth and gums can also deteriorate. Areas where teeth are missing also become under-utilized which can cause jaw bone deterioration.

How do dental implants work?

The root of the implant is actually connected with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. This process can take up to 6 months but often times less. Osseointegration type implants are the most widely used among practitioners. There is a screw at the bottom of the implant which is fitted into a hole that is drilled in the bone where the tooth is missing. After osseointegration is complete a temporary crown is put over the implant which will allow the gum to shape naturally around the implant. After that a permanent crown is inserted.

Advantages to dental implants

There are several advantages to replacing missing teeth. Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is overall appearance. Having missing teeth can destroy your confidence to smile in public. If you had an implant, nobody would ever be able to tell the difference so it would be like your tooth had never been lost. Replacing missing teeth is definitely important to preserve your bone density. Basically, any of the drawbacks mentioned above will be reversed if you have this procedure done. This can save you a lot more money in the future with other more serious problems that could arise from not replacing missing teeth.
