What Does An Orthodontist Do?

Orthodontists specialize in teeth and jaw irregularities and corrective proceduresAn orthodontist is a special type of dentist that deal with imperfections with your teeth. This mainly involves teeth straightening. More specifically, orthodontists deal with teeth issues like cross bites, over bites, under bites, teeth that are crooked, gapped teeth, etc. You might think that these are not more serious than simple appearance issues, but you would be wrong. Imperfections like this in your teeth can also negatively affect the working of your jaw and mouth.

Some of the most common methods orthodontists use to correct crooked teeth are things like braces, retainers, special headgear, etc. Depending on the severity of the condition, a combination of these devices may need to be used.

Anyone who has any of the imperfections mentioned above should go see an orthodontist immediately. In many cases, a certain condition with your teeth will be detected by your regular dentist who will then refer you to an orthodontist. The majority of patients an orthodontist will see are usually teenagers and preteens. This is because many of the problems orthodontists deal with need to be corrected before full oral development. At the same time, adults will sometimes choose to have braces put in to correct any unaligned teeth that have formed over time. Some people just want to have that perfect smile.

InOrthodontics is a specialization of dentistry that requires post graduate training order to become an orthodontist, he or she must complete a full dentistry degree and then undergo specific post-grad schooling in orthodontics in order to obtain their license. This orthodontics program must be part of the ADA (American Dental Association). Therefore, you should check into that before you decide on someone.

A good orthodontist must be able to asses the imperfections in the teeth and then properly explain what needs to be done in terms of treatment plans and options. They should definitely be able to answer any questions you may have in regards to nature of the conditions and the treatment plans. When you are choosing an orthodontist for yourself or especially your child, you should find someone who you trust or one that is recommended by your regular dentist whom you have known for years. Having someone close to your location is also a plus. You can also browse this site for more information on the top orthodontists in your area. Good luck!
