Root Canal

Root Canal - diagram of tooth and root structureThe dental procedure which people generally fear the most is the root canal. Most dentists can execute the procedure. However, in today’s era there is a special type of dentist who performs this procedure called an endodontist. Endodontists are highly trained in this area and are extremely knowledgeable on all the latest root canal breakthroughs and technology. If your regular dentist sees that you need a root canal, they will most likely refer you to an endodontist because they can perform the routine in a way where the patients can barely feel it. So don’t fret, there’s no need to fear the root canal anymore!

When do people need root canals?

Patient undergoes root canal surgeryA root canal needs to happen when the nerve inside the root of your tooth is damaged. Actually, there is a piece of pulp within every tooth where the nerve is located. When that pulp becomes damaged, the tissue inside will die. If you don’t take care of the diseased nerve by having a root canal procedure done, it is very possible that you will eventually lose that tooth.

What does the procedure entail?

The root canal procedure starts with taking out the diseased pulp (which also contains the bacteria and the damaged nerve tissue) from the inside of the tooth. The pulp is removed by drilling a hole in the tooth. Once the pulp is removed, the disease in the root canal is cleansed with special filing tools. The root canal is then sealed in order to prevent future diseases in the same area. The root canal will either be sealed the same day or the next week depending on if there is an infection or not. Finally, the entire tooth is capped with a crown which will remain permanently. This is meant as a source of protection for the once damaged tooth so that it can restore itself to full strength again without hindrance. After the procedure, you might feel a slight soreness in your tooth a for bit but it will eventually go away.

How do I know if I need a root canal?

Tooth roots displayed on an xrayThere are different possible warning signs that you might need a root canal. If you feel extreme pains on a tooth when you chew your food or apply pressure this is a definite sign. If you notice that a tooth has a discoloration (usually darker than the other teeth) this means that there is most likely a damaged tissue. Sometimes pimples may form on your gums or your gums may feel sore and tender. Finally, if your gums or a tooth is extremely sensitive to hot and cold temperatures this is a another warning sign that a root canal may need to happen.

Are root canals expensive?

The cost of root canals will vary depending on the severity of the condition and where the root canal needs to take place in your mouth. If you have the procedure done by your regular dentist, it can vary from $300-800. If you hire an endodontist, they might charge you up to twice as much. Most dental insurance plans, however, will cover root canal procedures.
